The firm gives back by serving the greater good through numerous pro bono efforts.
Graves Dougherty works on numerous cases representing indigent clients from Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas, and in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2007 the firm accepted more pro bono cases than any other firm in Austin.
Along with many other Austin firms, GDHM has been honored for several years with the Judge Suzanne Covington Pro Bono Service Award which honors firms and attorney volunteers who commit an extraordinary amount of time assisting the low-income clients of Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas.
In 2005, GDHM received the Joseph H. Hart Award, which is presented annually to a law firm that has demonstrated the integrity and dedication to legal services to the poor exemplified by Mr. Hart throughout his legal and judicial career.
Ben F. Vaughan III in 2004 and Susan P. Burton in 2000 were honored with the J. Chrys Dougherty Award, which is presented annually by the State Bar of Texas to an individual volunteer for exemplary dedication and commitment to the principle of access to justice for all people regardless of income.
As a founding member of the Law Firm Pro Bono Project, the firm furthers its commitment as a Signatory Firm of the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, a globally recognized standard of pro bono goals. Under the auspices of the Challenge®, firms devote three or five percent of their billable hours or 60 or 100 hours per attorney annually to the provision of pro bono legal services to individuals and organizations in need. The Challenge is administered by the Law Firm Pro Bono Project of the Pro Bono Institute.
"We continually strive to emulate the guiding spirit of our firm's founder, J. Chrys Dougherty, for decades a leading pro bono advocate in Texas and nationally. The Pro Bono Challenge, and the magnificent example set by so many signatory firms in their dedication to important pro bono work year after year, provide an ongoing source of inspiration for our firm to renew and increase our own pro bono efforts." – Mike McKetta, Shareholder
Additionally, attorneys provide pro bono legal services for organizations such as the Austin Film Society and Mainspring Schools.
